Mary Kavaney

Of Counsel

New York, US

Ms. Kavaney is Of Counsel to the Global Cyber Alliance. Prior to GCA, Ms. Kavaney worked at the Center for Internet Security. She developed relationships with law enforcement and other partners around the state.

From 2007 to 2015 Mary served as the Assistant Deputy Secretary for Public Safety for the New York State Governor’s Office working towards the passage of the state’s first anti-human trafficking law, all crimes DNA law and New York’s gun control law, the Safe Act.

Prior to working in the Governor’s Office of Public Safety, she was appointed as General Counsel at DCJS, the Division of Criminal Justice Services and for eight years she ran the Poughkeepsie Regional Office for the New York State Attorney General. Ms. Kavaney served as an Assistant District Attorney for four and half years at the Orange County District Attorneys’ Office.

What brought you to GCA, and what does GCA’s mission mean to you?

GCA was started as an organization dedicated to cybercrime prevention. While our mission has been articulated differently over the years, it has never strayed from this goal. One of its most valuable aspects is extending free and valuable solutions to people and organizations who are most at risk and can least afford such solutions.

What is the greatest bit of advice a parent or mentor has given you?

My mother was fond of saying, “those with much comes with great responsibility.” My parents were in the medical field so all of us kids found ways to be in professions to help others. The safety of others has always been a primary focus for me.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

Swim, bike, and teach special needs kids how to swim.

Where’s your favorite place in the world?

Lake Placid, New York. A no-boats-allowed lake, with beautiful mountains and a small town that still reminisces about the 1980 Olympics.
