GCA’s Chief Business Officer, Komal Bazaz Smith, held a lively conversation with Chris Voss where she detailed GCA’s mission, how to join us, and how to reduce cyber risks.
How do you think about the Internet, and how do you work to make it more secure?
Bazaz Smith explained that the Internet is not magic and that people are working every day to keep it safe, many of them in nonprofit organizations with razor-thin budgets and scarce resources. We don’t think about it every day, she explained, but as we have seen, a single company can error, a single time, and the Internet can shudder. Threats are evolving, the Internet is becoming even more integral to our daily lives, and our cybersecurity efforts have to keep up.
She explained, “the minute a scam comes in or a misinformation rumor hits a small business, and they are targeted, they can lose their livelihood, they can lose all their savings, and they can lose their reputation, which is horrible in a tiny community.”
To address this, GCA works with end-user communities through its Capacity & Resilience program, brings together key players in Internet infrastructure operations via the Internet Integrity program, and supports Common Good Cyber, among other initiatives.
Common Good Cyber is a global initiative (led by GCA in collaboration with the Cyber Peace Institute, the Cyber Threat Alliance, FIRST, GFCE, and The Shadowserver Foundation) with the goal of identifying and implementing innovative models for sustaining groups, organizations, and individuals involved in critical cybersecurity functions for the broader Internet community.
