GCA announces USD $500K Contribution from Craig Newmark Philanthropies

The Global Cyber Alliance (GCA) is proud to announce a USD $500,000 contribution from Craig Newmark Philanthropies to further mobilize coalitions of willing actors to defend people, organizations, and nations from cybersecurity threats.

Specifically, this funding will allow GCA to enhance key projects related to its Internet Integrity Program, which brings together key players in Internet infrastructure operations to identify top priorities for addressing cybersecurity issues that cannot be solved by any single actor or subset of actors independently. That work includes enhancing the Internet’s routing security infrastructure, fighting malicious unwanted Internet traffic, and creating trust in the domain name space.

GCA is the secretariat for Mutually Agreed Norms for Routing Security (MANRS). In 2024, participants increased by 12.5%, growing to over 1,200 organizations committed to enhancing the stability and security of the Internet. Between October 2023 and February 2025, routing incidents decreased by more than half. GCA will continue to invite network operators, Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), CDN and Cloud providers, and network equipment vendors to join the initiative, and also make significant improvements to the MANRS Observatory and application and audit processes.

AIDE is GCA’s cybersecurity intelligence platform that monitors global network traffic, detects potential threats, and delivers actionable insights to improve network security. The new Internet Pollution Index is a powerful visualization tool that shows network operators (and others) the malicious traffic coming from their networks. Our work will grow the Internet Pollution Index in scope and include new types of data. Using that data, GCA will bring ISPs, network operators, and others into a joint effort to clean up the Internet and disrupt attack campaigns at their source.

Domain names are continuously abused for malicious purposes, such as malware, phishing, and other types of cybercrime. Domain Trust uses the power of data sharing, community building, and mutual agreement to reduce the number and impact of malicious domains. Our work will continue to build a vibrant community spanning countries and sectors to fight domain abuse by defining a baseline set of practices, realistically achievable and objectively measurable, that can be adopted by large segments of the domain registration industry.

“The health of the Internet affects all of us, and it’s clear that no one group can fix these issues on their own. I’m proud to support the Global Cyber Alliance’s work bringing the right people together to tackle systemic problems affecting domain names, unwanted Internet traffic, and routing. A more trustworthy Internet is a building block to a stronger, safer world,” said Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist and Craig Newmark Philanthropies.

“Cybersecurity is a team sport, and Craig is a good coach who plays a key role in making collaboration possible. Many cybersecurity nonprofits, including close partners of GCA, rely on his support to carry out essential work protecting society from cyber threats. His ongoing commitment and generosity help us navigate limited budgets, complicated grant processes, and the unpredictability of donations. We’re thankful that Craig trusts GCA to deliver meaningful results that turn community-driven efforts into real-world impact,” said Philip Reitinger, GCA President and CEO.

With this grant, GCA will also continue to support the growth and coordination of Mr. Newmark’s Cyber Civil Defense (CCD) initiative driving cybersecurity through sharing best practices and collective action. GCA already plays an active role in collaborating with other CCD grantees’ communications efforts including the Take9 campaign.

About Craig Newmark Philanthropies
Craig Newmark is a Web pioneer best known for creating craigslist, which he stepped away from running day-to-day two decades ago. Craig’s full-time philanthropic work focuses on supporting organizations protecting America’s security and democracy. He has given more than $300 million in support of veterans and military families, nonpartisan journalism, cyber security education programs, hunger relief, and pigeon rescue. Craig was influenced by his Sunday School teachers who escaped the Holocaust, set his moral compass, and taught him to treat people like you want to be treated – and how to know when enough is enough. He’s not as funny as he thinks he is.
