In The News

“Individuals, businesses, and governing entities alike often operate under the illusion that the Internet ‘just works’ … until it doesn’t.”

GCA President and CEO Philip Reitinger was featured in an article yesterday in the International Business Times, “The Silent Cyber Crisis Alarming Global Economies and Why It’s Time for Collective Action,” by Adam Bent.

In the article, Reitinger discusses how important cybersecurity is for global economic stability and how, despite frequent news of cyberattacks and outages, far too many people remain complacent, assuming the Internet will function without disruption.

“Individuals, businesses, and governing entities alike often operate under the illusion that the internet ‘just works’ … until it doesn’t.”

Reitinger addresses the “digital pollution” that undermines the Internet’s trustworthiness and how GCA’s new Internet Pollution Index tracks malicious activity and raises awareness about how even reputable networks can unknowingly contribute to cybercrime.

“Cybercrime has become so automated, so widespread, that many networks are both victims and unwitting accomplices. We need more visibility and accountability to break this cycle.”

He also discusses the Common Good Cyber initiative that focuses on sustainable funding for nonprofits to protect essential Internet infrastructure, emphasizing that effective cybersecurity requires broad investment and shared responsibility beyond just technological fixes.

“There’s only so much nonprofits and NGOs can do on their own. The hard truth is that cybersecurity for the common good requires much more investment from governing bodies, the private sector, and civil society.”
