Protecting Young Adults from Online Scams and Cybercrime

About

In July 2023, the Global Cyber Alliance (GCA) announced a collaboration focused on fostering consumer education to address scams among young Internet users globally. This collaboration and other recent reports found that, despite their online experience, young adults indicated susceptibility and an uptick in experience with impersonation, investment, employment scams, and other cyber threats. This impact on 18- to 25-year-olds has significant cybersecurity implications for the broader society and economy, such as businesses, organizations, and academic institutions of all sizes.

“We assume ‘digital natives’ can easily avoid scams and risks online, but data shows the opposite. Instead, they are a growing target for cybercriminals. CyberFlex engages them where they live online and provides valuable resources to build a more trustworthy Internet,” said Brian Cute, GCA’s Chief Operating Officer.

To combat this risk, GCA and Amazon launched CyberFlex in June 2024, a global, mobile-forward, and interactive online solution that provides information and tools for young adults to avoid getting scammed online. Developed with a globally diverse group of young adult advisors, it contains actionable, targeted, and relevant information to prevent, mitigate, report, and recover from online scams and other cyber risks.
