More than 2,500 Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses Trained Across Kenya Using the GCA Cybersecurity Toolkit

Nairobi, 27 August 2024. The Global Cyber Alliance (GCA) is pleased to announce its participation in the SKIIVE Programme (Strengthening Kenyan Intermediaries and Innovation Ecosystem), delivered via the GIZ Digital Transformation Centre (DTC) Kenya.

GCA worked with lead implementing organisation GFA Consulting Group to develop a customised portal into the GCA Cybersecurity Toolkit for Small Business with free and effective tools and resources small businesses can use to reduce cyber risk.

GCA also delivered a train-the-trainer programme for GFA trainers, which facilitated the further training of more than 2,500 intermediaries and small businesses throughout Kenya.

With cyber-related attacks seen as a key business risk, this training focussed on the need for, and implementation of, essential cyber hygiene practices to prevent the majority of common cyber risks faced by small- and medium-sized businesses.

Highlights from the programme included:

  • 150 trainers from Entrepreneur Support Organisations across four regional centres in Nairobi, Eldoret, Kisumu, and Mombasa were trained by the GFA trainers.
  • More than 100 end-user events were subsequently conducted across Kenya, attended by 2,689 participants, of which 51.8% were female.

Kenya is among the leading economies in Sub-Saharan Africa and the most industrially developed country in East Africa. From October to December 2023, Kenya’s National Cyber Security Centre detected over 1.2 billion cyber threat events, a staggering 943.01% jump from the preceding period.

In this context, participants valued the training as very important to improve cybersecurity hygiene and resilience. In their own words, “Security begins with you,” and “cybersecurity is not just good to have, it is a must have.”

Brian Cute, GCA’s COO and Director of the Capacity & Resilience Program said, “Raising awareness and improving cyber hygiene for Kenyan startups and small businesses is fundamental to securing economic prosperity and reducing cyber risk. We are extremely proud of the contribution GCA has made with its partners to the success of the SKIIVE Programme.”
