As Technical Director within the Internet Integrity Program (I2), I am working on developing collaborative approaches to solving key cybersecurity shortcomings in the Internet infrastructure. This work is based on active engagement and collaboration with the operator, research, and policy stakeholder groups.
My experience in this area comes from more than a decade work at the Internet Society on improving security and resilience of the Internet infrastructure, bridging technology and policy. As part of this effort, together with a group of leading network operators, we developed and launched an effort that became an industry-led initiative called Mutually Agreed Norms for Routing Security (MANRS). I was also responsible for the development of its programs.
Some of the key cybersecurity shortcomings are known for decades, yet resolving these issues is challenging. Through my 25 years of experience in the Internet technical community I’ve seen again and again that collaboration and consensus building are the critical components of the solutions. This is why I consider active participation of various network operators groups, RIRs and the IETF very important.
Among my past experience I can mention my membership at the the Internet Architecture Board (IAB) in 2010-2012, and before the Internet Society I was Chief Technical Officer of RIPE NCC, responsible for the company’s IT strategy, including the management of one of the DNS root servers, K-root.
Where’s your favorite place in the world?
The Amalfi coast, and the town itself. It is truly a paradise on earth. But it is also amazing to see how every square meter is being cultivated with terraced citrus yards (Amalfi lemon). That always reminds me that by overcoming challenges and constraints humans achieve greater results than by avoiding them.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
I like to take a walk. Walking calms me down and stimulates thinking. But I am no stranger to more energetic activities – I like skiing and playing with my cats!
